Target Audience: Staff Supervising PG Research Students

The workshop will provide an opportunity for participants to explore each of the five approaches to supervising research that Anne includes in her framework, to look at individual strengths and identify areas for extension.  Some cases will be provided and participants are also encouraged to contribute anonymised short cases and dilemmas for further analysis.

By the end of the workshop participants will be able to:

  • Identify five different approaches to supervising research and consider how to blend them
  • Reflect on the advantages and possible limitations arising from their own preferences for supervising research
  • Apply different approaches to research supervision in order to identify some practical actions for managing typical dilemmas that might arise

Anne has just completed her work on an Erasmus funded project on the Modern Doctorate and is working on a project at the University of Bristol developing learning communities in Research Supervision.  She is an Associate Professor at the University of Stavanger in Norway and a Research Fellow at the University of Bristol.  There is more about her work and her writing at:
