Irene Hames is an independent specialist in research publication, peer review and research integrity with a PhD in cell biology (Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology) and 40 years’ experience in scholarly publishing.

She will deliver a seminar looking at integrity and ethical practice in research publication and editorial peer review, with a focus on how this has changed in an increasingly challenging and complex world.

Researchers have an obligation to act responsibly and ethically not only when carrying out research, but also when publishing their work and assessing the work of others. Research publication and peer review practices are, however, changing, and changing quite rapidly, bringing new norms and expectations. New unethical practices are also appearing, some the result of increasing pressures on researchers, others from individuals and companies seeking to capitalise on the commercial opportunities present in the new research publication environment. This lecture will create awareness of these issues and explore what researchers can do to benefit from the opportunities offered and avoid unwittingly becoming associated with questionable or unethical practices and possible accusations of misconduct.

Biography: Dr Irene Hames

Irene Hames is an independent advisor on research integrity, research publication and publication ethics, and has run many workshops in these areas for researchers at all career stages. Her experience in research communication and publication spans 40 years, including 20 years as the managing editor of a large scientific journal. She is the author of the book Peer Review and Manuscript Management in Scientific Journals, and in 2011 was the specialist advisor to the UK Parliament House of Commons Science and Technology Committee for its inquiry into peer review and the resulting report, Peer Review in Scientific Publications. Irene is a former Council Member and Director of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology and a member of the Advisory Board of the UK Research Integrity Office (UKRIO). In 2017 she was awarded the inaugural Publons Sentinel Award for outstanding advocacy, innovation or contribution to scholarly peer review. In partnership with the University of Dundee, she has developed the online course Responsible and Ethical Practice in Research and Publication, which is used as an educational resource by the University of Strathclyde.

Prerequisites

Cancellation Policy

When applying for a course, you should note that there will be a £50* to your department if you cancel within 5** working days or you do not attend, and a £25 charge for cancellations/ non-attendance between 6 and 10 working days. There will be no charge for cancellation made 10 or more working days before the event. Notifications should be made to OSDU@strath.ac.uk

A department is welcome to send someone else in your place if they wish without incurring a charge, providing that person has the necessary pre-requisites for the course. In the case of courses split over more than one day, you must attend ALL parts of the course. If you fail to attend any part you will be charged as outlined above.

*This is the standard charge for cancellation or non-attendance of course of 1 days duration or less. For some courses there may be a higher cancellation charge and if this is the case you will be advised of this at the time of booking.
