In this session Mike Murray (Civil & Environmental Engineering) will present details of an assessment for learning coursework that encouraged first-year students to develop an affinity with their professional community of practice. The students were required to select and read six inaugural addresses (1820-2015) of presidents of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) in preparation for writing their own inaugural address as the Strathclyde student president of the ICE.

Mike will explain the rationale behind the learning activity and provide results from the student coursework addresses (n=428) submitted 2010-2016. The coursework is replicable in any department/ faculty where the students will join a vocational (accountancy, engineering medicine, law, etc.) community of practice on graduating. After attending this session, colleagues will be able to consider adopting / adapting the initiative by using addresses from a professional institution / institute that has relevance to their own student’s careers.
