Sharing Practice – Learning About Communication through ‘Live Learning’

As part of the MPharm course redesign we recognised that ensuring our students are excellent communicators is an essential transferable skill in addition to their need to be able to communicate with patients.

Over the last four years we have worked with RolePlayUK and developed workshops based on “forum theatre” to engage our students in this important skill.  This support has helped turn technically ready students in to work ready students; individuals who have excellent interpersonal skills to complement their technical expertise and are fully prepared to communicate with their employers, customers and peers.

In this session we will describe how we have collaborated, the scope of the workshops and have a demonstration of some of the activities involved.

 Learning outcomes

  • To understand how communication skills were embedded in a revised degree programme

  • To explore how this could be adapted for other courses
