Target Audience: All staff with a role in PG Research Supervision

This session is designed to complement the training offered to Viva candidates at Strathclyde, and to offer some tools and approaches that will support academic staff in preparing to be an examiner or convenor in a Strathclyde viva. The workshop brings together a panel of experienced examiners from across the university to share experiences of convening and examining Vivas, and allow participants to share and answer questions and concerns related to the process.

The Viva is the culmination of many years of dedicated research into which the candidate has poured (usually, anyway) a good deal of effort, motivation and determination, and that has encompassed highs and lows that tested their intellectual and personal resilience. Convening and examining in a viva may present a number of anxieties and challenges. How can you engage with this process to ensure the experience is appropriately challenging, constructive and positive, and that the necessary procedures are adhered to?
