Target Audience: Postgraduate Research Students, Early Career Researchers

This workshop is designed to give participants an overview of the fundamentals of intellectual property (IP) ownership and the University’s commercialisation process, providing the opportunity to ask questions relevant to their own commercial aspirations. It will cover the University's Key Performance Indicators relating to Knowledge Exchange; key messages on protection, disclosure and ownership of IP and the role of Research and Knowledge Exchange Services.

Participants will then learn the basics of building a viable business model. Using their own research as inspiration, participants will create a tangible, visual document that maps key points such as: customer segment, channels, customer relationships, unique value proposition, revenue stream, cost structure, key activities, key resources and key partnerships.

  • • Learned about the different forms of intellectual property protection and the criteria required for patent protection in particular
  • • Developed an understanding of the inventor-ship and ownership status of the intellectual property that you generate
  • • Learned how to develop and validate an idea by identifying risks and challenging assumptions critical to the success of your solution
  • • Created a tangible, visual document that maps a business model on a single page
