This course is designed for professional and administrative staff who need to interpret and produce basic summary statistics, graphs and charts in business documents. The course assumes no prior knowledge of statistics.

By the end of the course, participants should:

  • Understand essential concepts in summary statistics and common options for graphically displaying data and relationships between variables.
  • Gain confidence in interpreting and presenting summary statistics and graphical displays typically found in business reports and publications.
  • Practice using Excel to produce summary statistics, tables and graphs, including using pivot tables where needed.

If time permits, more advanced statistical terminology will be briefly mentioned to raise awareness of further techniques.

All examples and exercises will be in Microsoft Excel.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of Microsoft Excel, including some experience of using in-cell formulas and creating simple charts. Exposure to business reports and publications presenting summary statistics and graphical displays of data is assumed, but no prior statistical knowledge is required. Participants will need to arrive with a laptop for undertaking the exercises (a small number are available for loan if necessary).
