Have you noticed how your students are on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram all the time? As the saying goes, if you can’t beat them, join them! These workshops will help you learn how to use social media tools intelligently and responsibly to instruct, communicate with, and engage your students in ways that are familiar and meaningful to them.

In the first session, you will hear about specific social media services and how they can be used for teaching and learning. You will have a chance to try them out in the session. You will then be encouraged to use social media with your students in the following month.

In the second session, you will discuss your social media teaching experiences. You will learn how to address any challenges that arose in your trials. You will also explore how to take your social media teaching and learning practices even further!

Attendance at both workshops is expected as their will be course work to complete between the sessions.

 Outcomes of the workshops:

  • Identify specific social media and Web 2.0 services
  • Contextualise social media tools within teaching and learning in higher education
  • Apply Web 2.0 services to teaching and learning for increasing student engagement such as collaboration, synchronous and asynchronous discussion, resource sharing, video and text-based lecture sharing, and referencing/searching tools
