Target Audience: LIR staff

The whole University deals with personal data, on students, staff and others, and the Library is no exception to this. For example, we hold data on what items have been borrowed and enquiries to our helpdesk. UK legislation on Data Protection was last updated in 2018 and, BREXIT notwithstanding, it is currently in line with EU regulations via GDPR.

Why should you be concerned? The Library has encountered a couple of personal data breaches and as a member of staff you need to be aware of the specific rules around reporting and dealing with these. Use of email is the main cause of incidents across the University and the University has new guidance on this topic. Other areas we will consider are:

  • Dealing with data subject access requests
  • Use of online tools such as Zoom
  • Privacy Notices
  • Retention periods for personal data
  • Physical security of information
  • DP audits
  • Enforcement and monetary penalties (AKA fines)

We will also discuss what further guidance and online training is available with respect to Data Protection.

We look forward to seeing you there, regrettably online, not yet in person!
