Every PhD has its ups and downs. For many the experience isn’t one of unalloyed joy from start to finish, nor is it a catastrophe all the way through. With no guarantees, of course, it is usually a journey of a generally gentle upward trajectory with periods of feeling lost, demotivated or challenged. And did you notice all the good stuff between challenges too? Of course, everyone’s PhD experience is different in the detail, but there are many common experiences – you really are not on your own in this.
With that in mind, this highly interactive workshop is createad to help you characterise and respond to the PhD in a way that will help you stay more upright than not and even to enjoy the experience! Of course, it wouldn’t be quite in keeping with the nature of research that we just tell you all the answers; instead we want to have you find your way to learn and thrive. The tools we share and approaches we discuss will help you to do that; to keep your feet on the ground and your head in the research clouds - in a good way!
This programme is to make sense of the PhD experience, work over critical aspects of it and give you tools to thrive in its ups and downs. Specifically, you’ll:
• Explore the nature and challenges of a doctoral programme
• Learn tools for learning from experience, essential for a PhD journey
• Understand tools and models for motivation
• Understand the impact of mindset and attitude on challenges and mistakes
• Devise your own personalised sense of life balance, use of time and personal responsibility
• Review your supervisory relationship with a view to enhancing its relationship
• Worked with a group of colleagues and peers in a supportive and confidential environment
