This is an online workshop.

Large classes can amplify many of the common challenges we experience in delivering teaching and learning excellence to our students.

This might include taking a flexible and personalised approach to your students, accommodating diversity and engaging students in active learning.

Active learning, a teaching approach that empowers students to take control of their learning by engaging in hands-on activities, has been widely recognized. Studies demonstrate that active learning yields advantages for all students, with particular advantages observed for individuals from marginalized backgrounds. Moreover, research suggests that fostering collaboration among students enhances their involvement, especially within diverse groups that differ, for instance, in their prior knowledge.

In this STEP workshop, we will explore a number of strategies for encouraging active learning in large classes. These include dividing your class into chunks, using mini-activities to keep students engaged, inviting anonymous responses using polling, and specific teaching approaches such as think-pair-share and one minute papers

This will be an active learning opportunity, so please come ready to discuss your own challenges and experiences, and learn from others
