Target Audience: Staff involved in Doctoral Student Supervision or the Line Manager for Research Staff

This is a live, online course.

This 3.5-hour workshop explores the multiple aspects of early-career researcher (ECR) careers and the ways in which line managers and supervisors can support them.

With an estimated 75% of people with PhDs working outside of academia, and the difficulties and precarities of the academic sector, it is really important for ECRs to be able to access up-to-date career advice and support from the academics they interact with on a frequent basis.

In this session, we will discuss how you can support ECRs with their career development by focusing on mindset, skills audits, goal-setting, branding, networking and finally job applications. The workshop will show you why every researcher should harness the power of LinkedIn whether they plan to stay in academia or move beyond, and how your ECRs can maximise their chances in competitive job markets by matching their expertise with the employers who value them.

Outcomes/Objectives

By the end of this workshop participants will be able to:

  • Comprehend the current career landscape for Early Career Researchers (ECRs) and the challenges they face in academia and outside.
  • Develop strategies to support ECRs in their career development, utilising tools such as mindset shifts, skill audits, goal-setting, personal branding, and network building.
  • Support ECRs in making effective job applications, by helping them identify their unique skills and how best to present themselves to prospective employers.
  • Understand the importance of LinkedIn for career development, regardless of whether ECRs wish to remain within academia or explore opportunities beyond.
  • Develop knowledge of how ECRs can best position themselves in competitive job markets, by aligning their expertise with the needs and values of potential employers.
  • Promote a proactive attitude towards career planning and readiness for future opportunities among ECRs.
