Introduction to Disability @ Strathclyde

This session will increase awareness of disability and examine how we can support disabled students and colleagues.

Disability is a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010, but what do we mean by and who comes under the term 'disability', how can we best support disabled students and staff, and how can we recognise and address the barriers faced in work and study environments?

In this session, participants will:

  • Consider what ‘disabled’ means, and how different models of disability shape our understanding;
  • Consider the legislative context and the University’s legal requirements, including Reasonable Adjustments for staff and students;
  • Recognise the importance of inclusive language related to disability, and consider strategies for making our language more inclusive;
  • Consider the experiences of disabled staff and students and how the barriers they face can be addressed.

This is an online session via Zoom. Auto-captions will be enabled. The session as planned will include an element of discussion and group work with other staff members. There will be a comfort break halfway through the session (after approx. 45 mins). If you have any specific access requirements for the session, please contact Simran Kaur (simran.kaur@strath.ac.uk).
