Since the launch of Chat-GPT in November 2022, Generative AI (Gen AI) tools have developed rapidly, and are continuing to have a significant impact on education.

While these tools present opportunities, there are also challenges relating to assessment, academic integrity, misinformation, and bias (amongst other concerns). The session aims to provide students with an understanding of these issues and how to recognise the limitations of Gen AI.

This session discusses some of the current tools available such as Chat-GPT, Microsoft Copilot, Dall-e, Midjourney, Hey-Gen, Grammarly and others. It also provides examples of usage and offers live demonstrations of a selection of the tools.

Students will be introduced to some of the common applications of Gen AI as well as some of the inherent challenges, including inaccuracy, biases, inequality, hallucinations, copyright, and security.

Students will be introduced to the University guidance on Gen AI use, including the University’s "Principles of Generative AI Use in Learning, Teaching and Assessment".

By the end of this session, students should be able to:

  • Explain what Generative AI is.
  • Distinguish different types of AI tools, and their common uses.
  • Understand the potential and limitations of prompts within AI tools.
  • Discuss the main issues of Generative AI use.
  • Understand and reflect on the University’s Principles of Gen-AI use.

Participants are not required to turn on either cameras or microphones.

Participants who are unable to join on time are welcome to join after the start time, or to leave early if they have other commitments.

Engagement with participants during the session will be via Q&A and completion of short polls.
