Target Audience: Staff at Strathclyde who have little/no experience in AI use.

Since the launch of Chat-GPT in November 2022, Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) tools have developed rapidly, and are continuing to have a significant impact on education.

While these tools present opportunities, there are also challenges relating to assessment, academic integrity, misinformation, and bias (amongst other concerns). The session aims to provide staff with an understanding of these issues and how to recognise the limitations of Gen AI.

This session begins with the opportunity for staff members to sign-up to ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, with tutors on hand to walk through this process, and demonstrate some of the features. Attendees will have further opportunities to test these platforms, and find out about other tools, such as Dall-e, Hey-Gen, and Grammarly

Attendees will learn some useful applications of these tools, as well as some of the challenges inherent in AI tools, including inaccuracy, biases, inequality, hallucinations, copyright, and security.

Attendees will be introduced to the University's guidance on Gen AI use, particularly "Principles of Generative AI Use in Learning, Teaching and Assessment".

By the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  • Explain what Generative AI is.
  • Demonstrate awareness of Gen-AI tools, and show basic ability in creating outputs.
  • Distinguish different types of AI tools, and their common uses.
  • Understand the potential and limitations of prompts within AI tools.
  • Discuss the main issues of generative AI use.
  • Understand and reflect on the University’s Principles of Gen-AI use.

The initial 30 minutes of the session will involve looking at how to sign-up for some AI tools, such as ChatGPT.

If you do not require this aspect of the training, you may join the session after the first 30 minutes.
