Target Audience: Staff performing web development activities

The aim of this session is to enable web developers to create accessible websites according to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines to meet the needs of diverse users.

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines provides accessibility standards for digital content and services. By designing web experiences with accessibility in mind, we can ensure that we are meeting disabled users’ needs and reducing barriers to participation for everyone. This session will focus on using native HTML, CSS and JavaScript best practices to create accessible webpages.

Through practical examples and exercises, participants will gain the skills to develop websites that follow accessibility best practices, ensuring that their digital content is inclusive and accessible to all users.

By the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • use HTML markup such as headings, lists and landmarks to structure webpages in a meaningful and consistent way
  • apply appropriate semantics to ensure that all interactive elements are properly identified to assistive technologies
  • use appropriate techniques to ensure controls are operable for keyboard and assistive technology users
  • employ appropriate focus management techniques when using dynamic content
  • test webpages for conformance to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines using manual and automated techniques
