Target Audience: Staff performing web development activities
The aim of this session is to enable web developers to create accessible web experiences to meet the needs of diverse users.
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines provides accessibility standards for digital content and services. By designing web applications with accessibility in mind, we can ensure that we are meeting disabled users’ needs and reducing barriers to participation for everyone. This session will focus on creating custom web experiences using WAI-ARIA and other techniques.
Through practical examples and exercises, participants will gain the skills to develop web applications that follow accessibility best practices, ensuring that their digital content is inclusive and accessible to all users.
By the end of this session, you will be able to:
- apply appropriate semantics to ensure that all interactive elements are properly identified to assistive technologies
- use WAI-ARIA attributes to define custom components where native HTML alternatives do not exist
- employ appropriate focus management techniques when creating dynamic web experiences such as Single Page Applications
- use live regions to identify dynamic content to assistive technology users
- test web applications for conformance to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines using manual and automated techniques
