Course Description;

Central to Strathclyde 2030 and the Social and Environmental Sustainability Strategy is the University’s commitment to our research making the world a better place. This is not only important in terms of the value of our research outputs, but also in how we conduct our research, and is a key component of our institutional research culture and integrity. Using sustainability as a lens can enable ALL research practice to take consideration of both positive and negative implications of research both locally and globally.  

To support our research staff and students, the Centre for Sustainable Development and Sustainable Strathclyde will lead this interactive workshop on how you can embed sustainability in your research plans, outcomes and activities. 

This taster session will provide an overview of issues you should consider and highlight how you can access more detailed training where necessary.  

The session will cover: 

  • Sustainability and relevance to research  
  • Research approaches for complex issues  
  • Examining your research through a sustainability lens 
  • Conducting your research sustainably – considerations for partnerships, travel and labs 
  • Raising your profile and using University systems to share your work 
  • The reciprocal relationship between research and University operations.  

Course Outcomes/Objectives;

  • Understand the relevance of sustainability to your research and the frameworks which can be used 
  • Learn from shared experience how to integrate link sustainability to the outcomes of your work  
  • Explore ways of working in collaboration with others to increase your impact and reach 
  • Understand sustainability issues you should consider when undertaking your research  
  • Using a sustainability lens to support your academic profile

For on-campus activity: 

  • Full access information for the venue is available via AccessAble   
  • Hybrid provision is not available  
  • There will be audience participation  
  • You are asked to attend the whole session 
  • There will be several breaks throughout the session  
  • The session is relaxed – this means you can stretch, move around, stim etc.  
  • In line with current University health and safety guidance, attendees may wish to use face masks. The room will have either mechanical ventilation or passive ventilation (i.e. open windows)  
  • Digital copies of resources will be emailed to participants upon request  
  • Please email us to request any material in accessible formats to be prepared and provided in advance/after the session [Any other access info, e.g. live captions, British Sign Language interpretation, hearing loop]
