Target Audience: HaSS PGR Students
In the digital age, social media offers researchers unprecedented opportunities to share their work and engage with diverse audiences, comprising other scholars, diverse stakeholders and the wider public in general. Platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), LinkedIn, and Facebook have become valuable tools for amplifying research findings, connecting with peers, and fostering collaborations. However, these platforms also present significant challenges.
This skills training session will explore how researchers can effectively navigate the opportunities and pitfalls of disseminating their work via social media. While these platforms allow for direct engagement worldwide, they also expose users to potential issues, such as trolling, targeted abuse, and misinformation. For instance, X, once a thriving hub for scholarly discourse, has recently faced scrutiny for disinformation and declining trust in its moderation policies, making it a complex platform to navigate. Through practical examples and discussions, participants will gain insights into how they can choose the right platforms and approach for them, crafting impactful content. The session will also address strategies for managing negative interactions, recognizing misinformation, and setting clear boundaries for online engagement.
