Target Audience: All staff and postgraduate researchers involved in leading, conducting or supporting research

Course Description;

Open Research is the culture and practice of making all stages of the research lifecycle more open, transparent, collaborative, inclusive and efficient. It includes practices such as Open Access to research outputs, sharing of research data and open engagement with communities outside of academia. In the face of the replicability crisis in social sciences, researchers are increasingly encouraged to make their data open and their research more transparent. This can present challenges in qualitative research where there can be additional considerations about ethical sharing of data (such as transcripts) and perceived conflicts between the ontological approaches taken in qualitative research and the focus on replicability.

Hosted by Prof Daniela Sime, Vice Dean of Research for Humanities and Social Sciences, this session will begin with a presentation from Dr Annayah Prosser, Deputy Director of the Centre for Qualitative Research at the University of Bath. Dr Prosser has published several outputs on this topic including When Open Data Closes the Door (2022; https://doi.org/10.1111/bjso.12576) and Being Open about the Unopenable (2025; https://doi.org/10.31219/osf.io/c78qu). After an opportunity for Q&A, attendees will have the opportunity to discuss practical considerations for opening up qualitative research and share their perspectives on how this can be supported further at the University of Strathclyde.

Course Outcomes/Objectives;

  • To promote the benefits of open practices in qualitative research
  • To highlight open practices that can be adopted by qualitative researchers
  • To show ‘hands on’ examples of open qualitative research
  • To discuss ethical issues relevant to open research
  • To provide opportunities for discussion on the challenges and opportunities provided by an open research agenda
