Target Audience: Research staff and any staff with a current or future team leadership role.

This course is a 'one off' and will not run again.

It is a live - online session.

Course Description;

Successful research team leadership demands more than the ability to manage objectives and delegate tasks. A research team leader needs to be able to motivate team members so that they are personally committed and empowered to do their best work for the team and the research project as well as seeking individual achievement. This is particularly the case in the context of academic culture, often characterised by loose collaborations between peer groups rather than more formal line management arrangements.

In this course, participants will learn to use the DISC behavioural framework, a well-established approach to understanding the behavioural preferences and motivational priorities of individuals, to enhance their effectiveness in research leadership, whether in a formal leadership position, or as an active collaborator. With this knowledge, participants will be better equipped to respond to the needs of fellow team members to become a more versatile communicator. They will gain insights into more appropriate work allocation and delegation. Participants will also learn how to recognise and tap into the motivations of colleagues to create more satisfied and effective teams.

Course Outcomes/Objectives;

By the end of this 3-hour online session participants will have:

  • Learned the DISC behavioural framework, the range of preferences and motivators associated with each behavioural style, and how to recognise the DISC styles of team members
  • Understood how to communicate more effectively with team members and colleagues, by tailoring communication according to their DISC style
  • Considered how to use their understanding of the DISC styles to improve delegation
  • Learned techniques to increase commitment and motivation in team members
