Target Audience: Research staff and anyone else involved in research

This course is a 'one off' and will not run again.

Live webinar – one-off live session hosted by Fistral via Zoom, virtual, no recording permitted

Course Description;

No-one likes being rejected. Unfortunately, rejection is a part of life as an academic researcher, whether journal articles rejected by reviewers, conference paper submissions rejected by editorial boards or funding bids knocked back by research councils. Additionally, even successful work brings with it exposure to rigorous and sometimes bruising criticism from peers, as part of academic discourse. Anyone hoping to build a research career has to find ways to handle this constructively to avoid getting ground down or discouraged. Just toughing it out isn’t a long-term strategy, as it can leave us vulnerable to stress and burnout.

Instead, this course will introduce participants to practical ways to harness the power of their own minds to cope better with rejection and respond constructively. Using these techniques over time will build the resilience to take setbacks in their stride, and embrace academic rejection as part of the path to professional excellence.

Course Outcomes/Objectives;

By the end of this 3-hour online session participants will have:

  • Learned and applied ‘self-talk’ techniques, to reduce the negative impact of (potential) academic rejection
  • Learned and applied the Mindset framework as a structure around which to reconfigure responses to setbacks and shift to constructive responses to rejection in the short and long-term
  • Understood the importance of ‘action’ and ‘control’ as practical strategies to bounce back from rejection
