Target Audience: PGRs

This course supports postgraduate researchers in developing psychological resources to navigate the pressures and uncertainties of academic life. The course explores how confidence and resilience are built over time and why imposter feelings are common particularly in research environments marked by high standards, competition and ambiguity.

Participants will examine the internal and external factors that influence self-perception, including feedback, comparison and academic culture. The session introduces practical strategies for recognising and challenging unhelpful thought patterns, building resilience in the face of setbacks, and sustaining motivation. It also includes space for peer discussion and reflection, helping participants normalise these experiences and share coping strategies. By the end, researchers will be better equipped to manage imposter thoughts, protect their wellbeing and maintain a sense of purpose and direction during the doctoral journey.

By the end of the workshop participants will have:

  • Recognise and critically reflect on patterns of imposter thinking in academic settings;
  • Apply strategies to build confidence and resilience during the research process;
  • Develop ways to manage setbacks, comparison and self doubt.
