Target Audience: PGRs

Building a network and using it effectively is a key requirement for all professionals, whether it is in an academic research setting, industry engagement or a conference. This workshop will focus onhow to establish a network and build it to support your career and aims.

We will cover networking strategies, engagement methods and how to “pitch” yourself and/ or your ideas. Participants will be introduced to various techniques that they can use in a variety of situations with a range of different audiences. How can we turn conversations to our advantage? How do we approach and engage with people? When and how should we follow up?

Participants will also be invited to complete the unique Electv Network Evaluation activity which encourages them to think about the status of their network and how they want to develop it further. Each individual will be encouraged create a personal networking strategy that they can use after the workshop and build on in future.

By the end of the workshop participants will have:

  • a networking strategy that they can implement directly after the workshop;
  • been introduced to a range of networking techniques & evaluated the status of their network;
  • an understanding of how they can use online networking to support their offline efforts.

PG Certificate in Researcher Professional Development

All postgraduate research students are eligible to access the Researcher Development Programme workshops. This workshop can contribute towards the PG Certificate in Researcher Professional Development (PG Cert RPD).

You can find credit and class information in the Researcher Development Programme Handbook and in NEPTUNE (Engineering, HaSS) or SPIDER (Science).

Please check with your department or Supervisor to confirm if you are enrolled on the PG Cert RPD and how many credits you are expected to achieve if you are unsure.
