Is this course right for me?
Target Audience: PGRs
This course is designed to demystify the final oral examination and support postgraduate researchers in approaching it with confidence. The session covers what to expect before, during and after the viva, including how to prepare effectively, dealing with questioning and formulating your responses. Participants will be introduced to the roles of examiners, institutional variations in viva practice and possible outcomes.
The course also addresses the emotional and psychological dimensions of the viva, offering techniques for managing nerves, handling difficult questions and maintaining composure under pressure. Through discussion, case examples and interactive exercises, researchers will gain insight into how to communicate the significance and rigour of their work clearly and convincingly.
By the end of the workshop participants will have:
- Understand the structure, purpose and typical expectations of the PhD viva
- Prepare effectively for questions and challenges during the examination
- Develop strategies to manage stress and respond with confidence
