Target Audience: PGRs
Narrative techniques offer vital tools for producing research writing, whether drafting a literature review, planning a thesis or writing an abstract. Understanding the possibilities of narrative can make the writing process both easier to navigate and more enjoyable. And narrative provides opportunities to connect with your readers by making writing accessible and engaging, especially useful when writing for non-specialist audiences. This workshop examines how narrative can help research writers connect with their readers by considering three key elements – structure, character and setting. You will consider how to ‘plot’ your work – using narrative techniques to give impetus and momentum. You will see how your research is populated with characters, and you will learn how to use settings to add depth and texture to the story of your research.
By the end of the workshop you will have:
- Defined narrative and understood how it can help when communicating your research
- Learned how to ‘plot’ your work
- Considered the content of your narrative – who are the characters in your research? What are the settings? How can you harness these in your writing?
