Is this course right for me?
Target Audience: PGRs
This course is aimed at giving participants speedy but robust ‘how-to’ so as to enable more versatility in listening styles. Participants will find out how to be more engaging using non-verbal communication including eye contact and body language, how not to interrupt someone while they speak, providing feedback and holding off judgment. We will look at showing empathy, being patient and focusing while others speak. We will also look at therapeutic listening and how its techniques can bring the best out of others.
By the end of the workshop you will have:
- Understood the power of allowing others to speak
- Learned how to analyse and prioritise information in a conversation
- Learned presence and mindfulness in conversations
- Developed coping mechanisms for academic and professional conversations

All postgraduate research students are eligible to access the Researcher Development Programme workshops. This workshop can contribute towards the PG Certificate in Researcher Professional Development (PG Cert RPD).
You can find credit and class information in the Researcher Development Programme Handbook and in NEPTUNE (Engineering, HaSS) or SPIDER (Science).
Please check with your department or Supervisor to confirm if you are enrolled on the PG Cert RPD and how many credits you are expected to achieve if you are unsure.
