Target Audience: PGRs

This online session introduces PGR students to the principles and practices of working across disciplinary boundaries. Interdisciplinary collaboration is increasingly central to tackling complex challenges in academia, industry, and society. Through interactive discussions, case studies, and practical exercises, participants will explore how to identify common ground between disciplines, negotiate differences in method and language, and build effective collaborative relationships.

The session emphasises transferable skills such as communication, negotiation, and project framing. Students will practise articulating their research in accessible ways, and reflect on their personal strengths and challenges in interdisciplinary teamwork. The aim is to equip students with practical strategies to initiate, sustain, and contribute meaningfully to interdisciplinary research projects.

By the end of the workshop you will have:

  • Learned the key features and benefits of interdisciplinary collaboration.
Identified common challenges and strategies for bridging disciplinary differences.
Learned to communicate their research clearly to colleagues from other fields.
Applied collaborative techniques to design interdisciplinary project ideas.
