Target Audience: PGRs

The purpose of a doctoral degree is not only to complete a thesis based on an original piece of research, it is also an apprenticeship in independent thinking and effective academic debate. As a result, the PGR student will face many situations in which they need to assert opinions, demands or opposition, whether with their supervisors, peers or other stakeholders, in order to steer their research to a positive conclusion and establish themselves as a confident, professional researchers.

For some of us however, speaking up for ourselves clearly so that our opinions or requirements are heard, respected and responded to can be difficult and stressful. Even those of us who seem confident and articulate about expressing themselves, may struggle in certain types of situations or with certain types of people. For example when: expressing disagreement; refusing requests; facing aggressiveness; or dealing with people in authority, such as PGR supervisors. This reluctance or difficulty in asserting ourselves verbally may result in stress, in misunderstandings and may undermine our success and wellbeing in the longer term.

In this online course, participants will learn a variety of approaches to increase their assertiveness as required. A range of psychological and communication techniques to help adopt helpful perspectives and to express needs and opinions clearly with a range of people will be explored. Practical techniques will be introduced to help remain assertive in the face of resistance to their proposals

By the end of this 2hr webinar participants will have:

• Understood the characteristics of assertive communication and the importance of nonverbal behaviour and psychological dimensions when communicating

• Learned to use a communication model that will help them understand their own difficulties when asserting themselves, and to develop the psychological perspectives and communication skills to increase their assertiveness, for example with supervisors

• Learned a range of assertive communication techniques, in order to be able to stick to their guns when meeting resistance to their requests or proposals
