Join us on 25 February 2026 to explore what we mean by ‘invisible illness’. This event is open to all staff, whether you have personal experience of an invisible illness or would simply like to learn more.

Running order:

  • 1.00pm – Welcome and scene-setting
  • 1.05pm – Gillian Mutch, Disability and Wellbeing Service: Overview of invisible illness in the workplace: what you need to know
  • 1.20pm – Sharon Turnbull, More Than Fibro Charity: Living with Invisible Illness
  • 1.35pm – Sean McGarvey, Senior Executive, Private Finance Sector: Living and working with a hidden condition or disability - working well and thriving
  • 1.50pm – Support and policies available at Strathclyde to support and closing remarks
  • 2.00pm – networking, information stalls and refreshments

The event will begin at 1.00pm in the Mandela Auditorium (Student Union), where you’ll hear from a range of inspiring guest speakers sharing their lived experience of invisible illness. The focus will be on thriving at work while living with chronic, unseen medical conditions and disabilities.

From 2.00pm, we’ll move to The Venue on Level 1 of the Student Union for an informal networking session. You’ll have the opportunity to browse a variety of information stalls, including colleagues from the Strathclyde Sleep Centre, Occupational Health, Disability and Wellbeing, Strathclyde Sport, and Catering Services, all sharing how they support staff and the services they offer. There will also be lots of freebies available.

Alongside Strathclyde colleagues, a number of local charities and organisations will be joining us, including Arthritis UK, Fibromyalgia support groups, and holistic therapists, all available for an informal chat about the support they can provide.

Food and light refreshments will be available throughout the afternoon, so please do come along, connect with colleagues, and show your support for this important staff event.
