Target Audience: PGRs

This practical and interactive workshop equips researchers with the skills to design engaging academic posters and use them effectively to communicate research and build meaningful connections.

Participants explore high-impact poster design, including information hierarchy, visual flow, accessible layouts and effective use of space. Through practical activities, they identify key messages and learn how to transform dense research into clear, digestible content that engages specialist and interdisciplinary audiences.

The workshop then focuses on moving from poster to conversation. Participants practise concise pitches of different lengths, adapt explanations for different audiences, and develop techniques for initiating and sustaining meaningful academic discussions. They also explore strategies for handling questions confidently and encouraging engagement around their research.

Finally, participants consider how to maximise networking opportunities at poster sessions and turn presentations into valuable professional conversations and connections.

By the end of the workshop participants will:

  • Apply principles of effective academic poster design, including information hierarchy, visual flow and accessibility.
  • Communicate complex research clearly and concisely to specialist and interdisciplinary audiences.
  • Deliver tailored research pitches and confidently initiate and sustain academic conversations.
  • Handle questions effectively and use poster sessions to maximise networking opportunities.
