Target Audience: PGRs
This practical and interactive masterclass helps researchers develop effective revision and editing skills to improve the clarity, structure and quality of their academic writing.
Participants begin by exploring the psychology of revision, including the differences between writer and editor modes and the importance of developing a revision mindset. Using anonymised examples, they practise identifying common writing weaknesses.
The workshop covers editing at different levels, from overall structure and paragraph organisation to sentence-level clarity, style and consistency. Participants explore common issues such as poor logical flow, repetition, ambiguous language and weak argumentation, including challenges that can arise in collaborative writing.
The session also considers how technology can support editing, alongside its limitations. Participants then apply the techniques to their own writing or a provided example, with opportunities for supportive peer feedback.
By the end of the workshop participants will:
- Understand the principles of effective revision and develop a productive editing mindset.
- Identify and improve weaknesses in structure, flow, clarity, argument and style.
- Apply practical editing techniques at paragraph and sentence level.
- Use technology appropriately to support the editing and revision process.
