Target Audience: PGRs
This practical and interactive workshop helps researchers develop clear, engaging writing for different audiences and purposes.
Participants explore storytelling and story arc mapping through a three-minute research story challenge, learning to communicate their work with impact and clarity. They consider audience needs and practise moving beyond specialist language to create writing that resonates with non-specialist readers.
The workshop covers key writing principles, including clarity, precision, tone, style and adapting writing for different formats. Participants apply these techniques to abstracts, press releases, social media posts and policy briefings.
The final section focuses on writing architecture, including paragraph structure, flow, coherence, signposting and transitions. Through practical group exercises, participants learn how to structure their writing effectively and create clear, logical and engaging research communications.
By the end of the workshop participants will:
- Develop clear and engaging research writing for specialist and non-specialist audiences.
- Use storytelling techniques to communicate research with greater impact and clarity.
- Adapt writing style, tone and content for different formats and audiences.
- Structure writing effectively using clear paragraphs, logical flow, signposting and transitions.
