Target Audience: PGRs
Participants will explore the purpose of a literature review and the differences between narrative, scoping, systematic and other review approaches. They will consider how to select an approach that is appropriate to their research question, disciplinary conventions and available evidence.
The session will cover how to define a focused area of enquiry, develop and document an appropriate search strategy, organise sources and apply inclusion or exclusion criteria where relevant. Participants will also learn how to evaluate literature critically, identify themes, debates, gaps and influential bodies of work, and synthesise evidence rather than simply summarising individual sources. The workshop will then examine how to structure the written review, develop a clear line of argument and position the participant’s own research within the wider field.
by the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Select an appropriate approach for their research question and disciplinary context
- Develop a focused strategy for identifying, selecting and organising relevant sources
- Critically evaluate and synthesise literature to identify key themes, debates and gaps
- Structure a coherent written review that positions their research within the wider field
