Target Audience: PGRs

Participants will explore why imposter feelings are common in research environments shaped by high expectations, uncertainty, comparison and critical feedback and the impact this can have on confidence, participation and research identity. We will examine how these feelings can appear through perfectionism, reluctance to speak up or contribute, discounting achievements, overpreparation or concern that others may have overestimated their capability.

The course will introduce a methodology to help participants recognise these competing internal voices, step back from automatic reactions and make more deliberate choices. Participants will learn practical tools to interrupt unhelpful thinking cycles, respond more constructively to setbacks and develop a healthier relationship with achievement, performance and self-worth.

by the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand imposter syndrome and recognise how it can appear in academic life
  • Understand how academic culture, comparison and feedback can influence self-perception
  • Identify situations, triggers and patterns of imposter thinking and behaviour
  • Step back from automatic responses and make more purposeful choices
  • Recognise their strengths, achievements and contribution as a researcher
