Participants will learn to improve their confidence in public speaking through a variety of techniques, including how to construct a presentation, differences in written and spoken English, formality and humour.

Participants will also learn specific skills for improving performance, from nerve management to speech delivery.


PLEASE NOTE THIS COURSE RUNS OVER FIVE HALF DAY SESSIONS: 10, 24, 31 MARCH AND 11, 28 APRIL FROM 13:00-16:00. YOU MUST BE ABLE TO ATTEND ALL FIVE SESSIONS TO PARTICIPATE.


By the end of the workshop participants will:

  • Learn how to construct a speech and powerpoint
  • Learn about the use of informal speaking styles when delivering a presentation, as well as use of humour and imagery
  • Receive individual feedback on powerpoint presentations and performance
  • Learn how to perform your speech, communicate with the audience and make an impact
  • Learn vocal exercises for diction, rhythm and articulation
  • Learn relaxation and breathing techniques to control nerves
  • Learn how to deliver your research to various audiences both academic and non academic.

All postgraduate research students are eligible to access the Researcher Development Programme workshops. This workshop can contribute towards the PG Certificate in Researcher Professional Development (PG Cert RPD).

You can find credit and class information in the Researcher Development Programme Handbook and in NEPTUNE (Engineering, HaSS) or SPIDER (Science).

Please check with your department or Supervisor to confirm if you are enrolled on the PG Cert RPD and how many credits you are expected to achieve if you are unsure.
